How do you catch a tone without caging it? Honour a voice without swallowing it? How do you make shapes speak, shadows laugh, and silence hold its breath?

Ten years ago, we attempted to answer some of these questions in The Walleye Magazine with the arrival of a poetry submission and an idea to pair it with a tailored illustration by visual artist boy Roland. The words began to leap off the page, and since then, it has become a monthly ritual—this conversation that plays out between the written and visual.

Field Notes for Translating Ghosts: A Decade of Quiet Conversations features a selection of written works—from poems, to short stories, to song lyrics—originally published in The Walleye over the last decade alongside boy Roland’s visual explorations. The pages of this anthology are not only a celebration of the voices and stories unique to Northwestern Ontario, but a chance to revisit all those quiet conversations readers have tuned into every month for the last 10 years—ears pressed against the door, curious as to what they might hear.
