Co.Lab Gallery presents,

OFF IN ALL DIRECTIONS - WORKS IN CLAY

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18TH, 2022 6-10PM

EXHIBTION CLOSES NOVEMBER 20TH

This three day exhibition and sale features work from four Ceramic Artists:

LIZ POWLOWSKI

PETER POWLOWSKI

TIM ALEXANDER

VIVIAN WOOD-ALEXANDER

Peter Powlowski grew up here, in Fort William. Liz Powlowski grew up in England and South Africa. The pair met in art school in England, and built their life in Kaministiquia. Together, they raised three sons and for many years ran Strawberry Hill Workshop. They have also lived and worked in Mexico periodically, more so in the last 25 years. Liz and Peter now reside in Thunder Bay, making limited amounts of one-of-a-kind hand-built work in clay.

Vivian Wood-Alexander is an observer of the natural world particularly Lake Superior’s sensory abundance. As an arts educator, Vivian’s work is inspired by nature, ecology and play. As a part of her lifelong practice of inquisitiveness, she records the way she experiences the world by drawing and watercolour painting en plein air. Vivian’s own practice intersects with those of her partner, Tim Alexander where she amplifies the graceful forms through brush work and sgraffito.

Tim Alexander grew up in Thunder Bay and was introduced to clay playing on the beaches of Black Bay in Dorion. Later in high school, he was immediately drawn to pottery when it was offered as a medium in the art room. Tim’s grandfather helped him build a potters wheel. He continued to pursue ceramics through a fine arts program at Lakehead University and set up his first studio in 1986.

After 30 years of working in clay, function continues to be the basis for most of Tim’s ideas as a potter.

“I like that pottery is experienced both as a visual  as well as a physical thing appreciated in the context of use, not something that just sits on a shelf. I would even argue that we do not fully appreciate a pot unless we are able to handle and use  it.”
