Marielle Orr is a Canadian based mixed media artist that specializes in acrylic painting. She attended Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario where she received her Honors Bachelor of Visual Arts. She has been practicing for four years outside of school, exploring human connection, emotion and experience. Her art has been featured in The Walleye as well as Create Magazine. Orr has held a number of local solo shows in Thunder Bay, and has also been a part of a few international group shows in places like Berlin, Germany and Madrid, Spain. Her goal with her art is to tell stories and bond with her audience.

“My current body of work takes a look at the human body as a vessel for our emotions, experiences, and memories. It is through our bodies that we connect with the world and with others. As an artist, I am fascinated by the way in which the human body can convey so much without words. Through my work, I explore the connection between the physical body and the emotional and psychological states that inhabit it.

I believe that our bodies hold a story that is unique to each individual, yet universal in its themes of love, pain, joy, and sorrow. In my art, I strive to capture these themes and express them in a way that connects with others, creating a shared experience that transcends words. Ultimately, my goal is to create art that speaks to the beauty and complexity of the human body, and the profound connections that exist between us. My process for these works begins with a base layer of expressive colour blocking with thin layers of paint that are later built up to create depth. I then use the composition I’ve created from this colour blocking to begin to carve out the figure and its position. I work with the foreground and background simultaneously to create harmony throughout the piece. This body of work has become a true exploration of expression and acceptance of oneself.
